En el corazón de la isla de Fuerteventura se encuentra uno de
los grandes enigmas de la historia re
ciente que aún no ha sido resuelto. Esto ha despertado el interés
de cada vez más personas por descubrir los secretos que esconde la
Casa de los Winter, situada en el solitario paraje natural de Jandía,
cerca de la playa del Cofete, por lo que también se la conoce como «el
chalet de Cofete».
Pero, ¿qué hace la Casa Winter en medio de la nada? ¿Quién la mandó construir y por qué? Estas incógnitas han generado numerosas leyendas y especulaciones, aunque en este caso nos basaremos únicamente en pruebas documentales y dejaremos de lado las teorías ocultistas.

Construcción de la casa Winter
La construcción de la Casa Winter, situada en un remoto rincón de difícil acceso, se inició en 1946. Tradicionalmente, llegar a ella requería muchas horas de caminata o viajar en camello. Aunque en la actualidad existe una carretera, las condiciones del trayecto no la hacen fácil de alcanzar. La Casa Winter se encuentra en Cofete, en una explanada entre montañas y una extensa playa, lo que ha generado interrogantes sobre las razones detrás de su construcción y las características singulares que la hacen destacar a ojos de los historiadores.
A pesar del paso del tiempo, la mansión ha conservado su lujoso esplendor. Construida en piedra y hormigón, cuenta con una imponente torre a la derecha, con ventanales que ofrecen una vista panorámica del horizonte de Fuerteventura. El interior de la casa es igualmente espectacular, con dos plantas que albergan estancias exclusivas como comedores con chimeneas, habitaciones y otros espacios de función incierta. Todas las habitaciones están dispuestas alrededor de un patio interior y balcones con vistas privilegiadas. Incluso se conservan detalles originales de la decoración, como un cocodrilo tallado en madera.
La construcción de la Casa Winter comenzó en octubre de 1946 bajo la supervisión del ingeniero alemán Gustav Winter. Los dos primeros años fueron intensos, pero después la obra se fue ralentizando y en 1954 no hay constancia clara de si se llegó a finalizar. El hecho de que Gustav Winter viviera en Madrid mientras se construía su casa de verano y recibiera informes semanales detallados con fotografías ha permitido llevar un registro minucioso de su progreso, piedra por piedra.
Esta correspondencia entre el propietario, el ingeniero y el equipo de trabajo ha sido una valiosa fuente de información, incluyendo detalles sobre el presupuesto, la evolución de la obra y el personal contratado. Sin embargo, no se tiene una clara comprensión de la intención detrás de la construcción de esta edificación tan apartada de todo, lo que ha dado lugar a numerosas teorías y leyendas complicadas
La historia de la Villa Winter
La historia de la Villa Winter es variada, pero la versión oficial sostiene que Gustav Winter mandó construir esta edificación para disfrutar de sus veranos en Fuerteventura, lejos del bullicio de su vida cotidiana. La existencia de grutas naturales debajo de la casa de los Winter y el hecho de que Gustav Winter fuera de origen alemán en pleno contexto de la Segunda Guerra Mundial ha alimentado la imaginación de los curiosos. Esto se vio amplificado cuando se supo que la familia nunca llegó a disfrutar de esta residencia de verano, a pesar de la enorme inversión realizada y las ilusiones depositadas.
Curiosamente, los primeros ocupantes de la casa Winter no fueron sus propios dueños, sino los trabajadores que la estaban construyendo. Debido a su difícil acceso, los empleados ocuparon las habitaciones del sótano y luego las habitaciones principales durante los años que duraron las obras. A partir de 1951, se construyó una carretera que permitió que Gustav Winter visitara la casa y pasara varios días viendo los avances en persona. Estaba tan emocionado que dejó constancia escrita de cómo mostró la casa, aún sin terminar, a personalidades de la época y autoridades locales.
La idea de Gustav Winter era promover Jandía como un destino turístico entre sus compatriotas, por lo que al regresar a Berlín en 1958 intentó arrendarla, pero no lo consiguió. La casa continuó vacía, con algunas excepciones de amigos que la alquilaban por unos días. Sin embargo, esto no fue suficiente y surgieron problemas económicos, lo que llevó a vender gran parte de la propiedad de Dehesa de Jandía y luego dividir la finca en cuatro partes, que pasaron a manos del Sr. Myhill, las hijas de Manuel Girona y las otras dos partes para Winter y su esposa, Isabel Althaus.
En 1965, con 72 años, Gustav decidió vender su parte para comprar una pequeña casa en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y disfrutar de su vida. Sin embargo, también quiso asegurarse de que su preciada residencia tuviera un futuro, por lo que se aseguró de que dejara de estar abandonada y pagó a la familia Pérez Acosta para que la cuidara y ocupara junto con sus hijos. Después de dos años y medio, la casa volvió a quedar vacía.
Cómo llegar a Cofete y la Casa Winter
Tradicionalmente, era a pie y con ayuda de animales. Sin embargo, a partir de 1951, se construyó el primer acceso por carretera, que coincide con el trazado utilizado actualmente. Un inmejorable punto de partida para realizar la visita a la Casa Winter puede ser desde el IFA Altamarena Hotel, mediante la carretera Punta de Jandía que te lleva directamente.
En definitiva, la Casa de los Winter supone un pedazo de historia escondida en un recóndito paraje en mitad de la nada en Fuerteventura. Pese a ello, sigue siendo visitado por curiosos y turistas atraídos por sus leyendas, además de por su peculiaridad arquitectónica.
